Police search for suspected serial rapist
published: Thursday | August 7, 2003

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff reporter

THE POLICE are searching for a man they believe is a serial rapist who is reportedly on the loose in the district of Bowden Pen, near the border of St. Thomas and Portland.

Residents of the district became suspicious following the discovery of the partially decomposed body of Shawn Kirkland, a 28-year-old farmer from the area. Kirkland's body was discovered on Sunday in a shallow grave.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Kirkland may have been killed at a nearby river after he was attacked by the serial rapist, who was said to be armed with a gun and a knife. The incident occurred on July 31.

It is alleged that shortly after Mr. Kirkland was killed, the rapist went to the farmer's house and told his common-law wife that he was kidnapped and killed and she should accompany him to the scene.

During the process, he held her at knife point and took her to his house in the district, where she was held hostage until Sunday afternoon when she was rescued by the police.

SECOND BODY

Kirkland's was the second body found by the police in a shallow grave on Sunday in St. Thomas. The first was identified as Lloyd Anthony Brown, a 39-year-old plumber of Commission Road in Rockfort, eastern Kingston. Brown was reported missing on July 29.

His body was found with gunshot wounds in the Cambridge Hill area of St. Thomas. He was last seen alive on July 29 driving his Nissan Sunny motor car. The police said his car is still missing.

The police are also reporting the disappearance of two other persons. They are 11-year-old Yadone Poply Griffiths, of Fourth Avenue, Kingston 3, who has been missing since Tuesday, July 29.

That day the youngster left home at about 6:00 p.m. and has not been seen since. When last seen he was wearing blue jeans and brown shoes.

Also missing is Junwaynea Stacy-Ann Johnson, otherwise called "John Wayne," of Wilmington district, St. Thomas. She has been missing since July 31. The police said that on the day in question she left home for an undisclosed location.
