'Take your time, young man'
published: Sunday | August 10, 2003

TWO WEEKS ago in Outlook in the article, 'Mother used to say', we asked the women to share with us what their mothers told them about men and relationships. This week we find out what this same parent has been telling her son! We note that while a few spoke of respect and caring, many exhibited a profound distrust of the opposite sex, which they seem to have sucked with their mother's milk:

Christopher Mills, 27: She told me that most women were devious, and that I should not marry a woman unless I had spent enough years to find out who she really is.

Irvine Rowe, 33: She did not say much. She said my choice would be up to me.

Garfield Fairplay, 20: Women are tricky. Beware of them. Make sure to choose the right one, because some of them will want to use you.

John Kelly, 22: She said that any woman I marry must be respectful. She did not say it, but I know my mother would prefer if this woman went to church too. She said she should not be from the ghetto and she should not be white. She feels that a lot of white people are still prejudiced against blacks.

Mark Jarett, 30 'something': I can't recall if she ever broached the subject. One thing she said was to make sure that you get someone sensible. I am still searching.

Brian Thompson, 35: I really listened to friends. They said that the girls are tricksters. All are tricksters until you prove them innocent.

Al Chambers, 35: She said make sure to find a good woman and start having kids early. There is a tendency among men to pick, choose and refuse until you choose rubbish, she said. She also said, don't bring any rubbish to me. But she did say that I should treat my wife with respect when I get her.

M. Thwaites, 32: Respect women. Never hit a woman. I don't hit women. A man who hits a woman is not a man.

Neville Reid, 27: She said I must treat them well, in just the same way I would want to be treated.

James Hill, 22: She say woman wicked. Be careful, especially when it come to court business.

E.G. Taylor, 64: She never really said much, but she showed me by her example. She was excellent in all departments of motherhood.

Paul Pearson, 26: The way she brought me up, along with my sisters, indicated how I should treat women. Women need respect, they need a listening ear and good communication and men should know that they are always on the same level with them.

Christopher Brown , 28: Beware of women. They are very tricky. Young ladies are not into relationships for love anymore. There are few virtuous women. But, if you find a good woman, treat her kindly and with affection.

Noel Sloley, 31: Never live in a woman's house. Have your own home.

Robert Dennis, 39: She always tell me seh woman come een like bus. As one leave another one drive in. Never give a woman my all. She also say, if a woman give me a jacket, it is better to take what is not mine than to refuse what is my own.

Some names changed as requested.
