THE EDITOR Sir:
RE THE sculpture at Emancipation Park,
I find the reaction of persons who have objected to it to be nothing if not schizophrenic.
No one could accuse us of being a prudish society. In fact, the opposite is true. Listen to the language of our entertainers. Look at the dresses worn by some of our young and not-so-young girls. Nothing is left to the imagination. Consider the behaviour of so many who exhibit vulgar and explicit behaviour. Add to this the immoral sexuality of men who abuse under-age girls and women. To say nothing of the ugliness of crime and violence.
I suggest that this sculpture has a much deeper meaning than the size of the genitalia depicted. Look at the sublime expression on the upturned faces of the two people. They seem to be looking for some guidance from above. Perhaps we Jamaicans are too taken up with clothes and worldly possessions to appreciate the beauty of the human form.
I trust the day will soon come when we all will take a deeper look at ourselves and truly free ourselves.
I think that is what the artist was trying to help us to do. So take another look and try to see the beauty, not the ugliness.
I am, etc.,
