Civilians as volunteer traffic cops?
published: Monday | August 11, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM writing to suggest to the Minister of National Security and his assistants that they consider asking citizens to volunteer themselves as traffic police.

This would help in the effort to alleviate the many road hogs and disrespectful drivers who have no regard for other users of the road.

What would happen is, as an undercover traffic police the individuals (no uniform, just an identification card/badge) have the authority to give tickets to traffic offenders. These individuals, of course, would be provided with the necessary training in traffic law.

On Wednesday while travelling from Portmore to Kingston I witnessed two cases involving three drivers that deserved traffic tickets, unfortunately I didn't get their licence plate numbers

First, the driver of a grey van who stopped in the middle of the road in the vicinity of the fishing village near the Causeway bridge to collect something from a fish vendor. He had no care in the world about the line of vehicle that was building up and had to wait behind him.

Second, a black/dark green pick-up and a Subaru travelling along the Zinc Factory main road driving side by side having a conversation that lasted for some three to five minutes. This again, in no regard for other users of the road and who had no choice but to wait until these two gentlemen decided to end their conversation.

I know that the police cannot be around to see all these traffic offences, hence my suggestion of having credible public servants volunteering to assist them to rid and reduce our streets of these barefaced offenders. I am one such person who would be more than willing to volunteer. Please consider!

I am, etc.,
