MAYOR OF St. Ann's Bay, Delroy Giscombe, is seeking to borrow a fire unit for the parish of St. Ann as the four units which serve Ocho Rios and St. Ann's Bay are down.
The three trucks which serve Ocho Rios have not been working for some time and the one in the parish capital of St. Ann's Bay "can hardly move," Mayor Giscombe disclosed recently.
PLAGUED BY SEVERAL FIRES
He said St. Ann has been plagued by several fires in recent weeks, and because there has been no fire trucks to respond, property owners have suffered great losses. The Mayor also disclosed that there were far too few hydrants in the parish and a number of them were not functioning properly.
Mayor Giscombe describes the Ocho Rios problem as "particularly disturbing," because Ocho Rios is St. Ann's largest town, and an international tourism resort destination.
Mayor Giscombe said he was sending what he described as "an urgent SOS" to Local Government Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, for her to lend the parish a fire unit, with the gravest urgency, and have emergency repairs effected to the disabled vehicles.
