Jamaica's Lowe makes positive start to season
published: Monday | August 11, 2003

Lowe... scored opening goal for team.

GLASGOW, Scotland, CMC:

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO'S Colin Samuel and Onandi Lowe of Jamaica opened their scoring account for 2003/2004 on day one of the new British football season on Saturday.

Samuel netted for Dundee United in a 2-1 loss to Hibernian in the Scottish Premier Division, and Lowe's Rushden & Diamonds were also on the losing end in spite of his first-half strike.

Trinidadian Russell Latapy, on debut for Falkirk, inspired his side to a victory over Inverness in Scotland's First Division.

Samuel, who moved from Falkirk during the summer, made amends for a couple of first-half misses by scoring with his first touch of the ball after the restart.

Moving into the box, Samuel collected a pass from Billy Dodds and scored easily from four yards in the 46th minute.

Hibernian then rallied for the victory through goals from Derek Riordan (74th) and Thomas McManus (88th).

Falkirk were forced to come from behind for their win after Stuart McCaffray sent Inverness ahead after only 13 minutes.

In the 36th minute, a Latapy corner was only cleared as far as David Nicholls and when he volleyed first time, on-loan Livingston striker Colin McMenamin flicked it past Mark Brown from seven yards for the equaliser.

Falkirk claimed the winner when Jason Lee - recently signed from Hartlepool - spectacularly volleyed a Latapy corner high into the net from 14 yards in the 83rd minute.

South of the Scottish border, Lowe and another Jamaica international, Paul Hall, combined to give Rushden & Diamonds the lead against Luton, who roared back in the second half with three goals.

Lowe sent Rushden and Diamonds ahead in the 38th minute following a through ball from Hall.

But two goals by Tony Thorpe and a late clincher by Matthew Spring in the 90th minute helped Luton secure a 3-1 comeback victory.
