'Nothing wrong with nude statues
published: Tuesday | August 12, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Why do Jamaican people find a fault in every thing? I was just watching the 7 p.m. news on TVJ only to hear more about the controversial nude statue at the entrance to Emancipation Park.

Look at Michaelangelo's famous nude sculpture, the Pieta David. It is a part of history and shares the same amount of importance as the La Giaconda (Mona Lisa) by Leonardo da Vinci.

It just hurts me to hear these stupid people on the news talking about when they take their childen to Emancipation Park they feel uncomfortable with the nude statues there. It's those same parents who allow their children to watch R-rated television programmes on channels such as Cinemax.

Emancipation Park and those statues are the best things to come from Jamaica in years. All the park needs are some tall trees and some more statues of people who made a great impact on the Jamaican culture like Bob Marley and Miss Lou.

Sometimes I have to wonder if we are stupid. Come on man, in three to five years tourists will be coming from all over the world to see the statues and eat ice-cream in the park and maybe we will get enough foreign exchange to get out of debt.

I am, etc.,
