PRIME MINISTER P.J. Patterson has called an emergency meeting with National Security Minister Dr. Peter Phillips, Police Commissioner Francis Forbes, and Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force.
Reports are that the meeting is scheduled for this morning at Jamaica House.
The Prime Minister, who returned from the United States yesterday, called the meeting following comments made by members of the Police High Command on Monday that the nine month-old anti-crime plan had failed.
Immobility and the lack of vital resources were some of the problems said to be hampering the lawmen in their fight against crime. There are also reports that the planned multi-agency approach to tackle the crime problem across inner-city communities was not being supported.
Also, the Jamaica Constabulary Force was promised $40 million in April to purchase more than 40 new vehicles but the funds are yet to be released. These, and the fact that homicides are up one per cent over the same period last year, are some of the issues expected to be discussed at today's meeting.
