The public is watching you, police officers
published: Friday | August 15, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE CONSTANTLY complain about the acute lawlessness now an apparent inherent part of our society and culture, yet we constantly do nothing. Let me seek to start correcting that.

At the stoplight by Hope/Trafalgar/Waterloo Roads about 8.36 on August 13, I witnessed a Police Radio Car SAC 21, run the red light while others like myself doomed to voluntary compliance with the law, had to sit patiently until the light changed. With an articulated bus ahead of another JUTC bus and both behind a line of cars having turned right onto Trafalgar Road, the Radio Car was still at the stop light when it changed to red. Understandably, the buses had to go through to clear the traffic.

Those entrusted with responsibility to uphold the law, should have waited with those upon whom the law is enforced.

I only wonder whether the traffic cop on bike at the start of Trafalgar Road, would have ticketed his colleague under the Road Traffic Law. We must do better than that.

Officers, you are now being called to account. The public is watching you; I am watching you.

I am, etc.,

DAVE DAVID
