Powell... bagged 2 for 22 (left) and Beckford... grabbed 2 for 40 (right). - File A DETERMINED Jamaica fightback against the Windward Islands left the team's low-scoring TCL Group/West Indies Under-19 three-day cricket championship match in the balance at Wales in Guyana at the end of yesterday's opening day.
Jamaica were dismissed for 124, but combined efforts from spinners Howard Powell (2-22), Gavin Wallace (2-12) and Alton Beckford (2-40) have Windward Islands reeling on 112 for eight at the close.
Derwin Charles, 29, Miles Bascombe, 21, and Mervyn Matthews, 20, scored most runs for Windward Islands.
Earlier, despite a reasonable 27-run opening stand between Xavier Marshall, 33, and skipper Simon Jackson, six, Jamaica lost three wickets at the same score.
Pacer Mervyn Matthews (3-18) picked up the three quick wickets, he removed Jackson, leg before, bowled Andre Hall, zero, and trapped Jamie Trenchfield, zero, in front.
However, despite Marshall's effort, Chadwick Walton, 20, Howard Powell, 14, Donovan Sinclair and Krishmar Santokie, 12 each, Liam Sebastien had the final say, taking 5-31 to rap up the Jamaican innings.
At LBI: Trinidad and Tobago secured first innings points against the Rest of Americas (ROA).
Led by an unbroken first wicket partnership between Denesh Ramdin, 84, and Tishan Maraj, 65, Trinidad and Tobago closed on 162 without loss in reply to ROA's 135 all out.
Earlier, the ROA squandered a golden opportunity to pile up a huge total after they were in a relatively good position, 100 for two at the lunch interval, but lost their remaining eight wickets for 35 runs. Stephen Outerbridge top scored with 58 against left-spinner Kavesh Kantasingh (3-12) and pacer Ravi Rampaul (3-43) were mainly responsible for their demise.
At Diamond, Leeward Islands took first innings points from Canada. Canada were dismissed for 131 against Larry Joseph, who ended with 9-61.
In reply, Kieran Powell hit 48 for Leewards to reach 174 for eight.
At Uitvlugt: Barbados closed on 253 for eight against Guyana. Martin Nurse, 22, Renaldo Parris, 33, and Kirk Edwards, 36, scored most runs for Barbados against Asad Fudadin 3-32.
