TWO-YEAR-OLD DEBUTANTE SEAGAR and the vastly improved JACK DE PRINCE turned in impressive performances in the co-feature races on yesterday's Jamaica Livestock Association/Jockey Club Day 10-race programme at Caymanas Park.
In the JLA-sponsored Supreme Feeds Trophy race for native bred two-year-olds (maidens) over 1100 metres, SEAGAR, a 2-5 favourite, made all to win by five lengths from 5-2 chance PERFECT TEN who in turn had 2 1/2 lengths to spare over highly fancied SHARAPOVA at 2-1.
SLEW DANCER (injured) was declared a late non-starter, reducing the field to eight.
After turning for home some two lengths clear of SHARAPOVA who chased him in the backstretch, SEAGAR effortlessly increased his lead to win on a canter, covering the distance in the smart time of 1:07.2.
Trained by Percy Hussey, the well conformed roan colt by Law Of The Sea out of Fight For Pleasure was ridden by his brother Charles in the white and royal blue silks of their mother, Ruth. SEAGAR was bred by HAM Stables Limited.
Meanwhile, the Wayne DaCosta-trained JACK DE PRINCE raced only the clock down the stretch in winning the $550,000 Jockey Club Stakes over 1400 metres by 5 1/2 lengths from the Husseys colt TO SIR WITH LOVE (10-1) who was 4 1/2 lengths clear of the early pacesetter JOHNNY'S KING (4-1) in a field of six native bred three-year-olds.
Installed a 3-5 favourite JACK DE PRINCE, bidding for his fifth win from his last six starts, chased the early leader JOHNNY'S KING before being sent through by the apprentice Dane Nelson leaving the half mile.
He turned for home some four lengths clear of JOHHNY'S KING and TO SIR WITH LOVE disputing second and kept on strongly for an emphatic win, stopping the clock in a smart 1:24.3 behind splits of 23.4, 46.3 and 1:11.4 for the first 1200 metres.
JACK DE PRINCE thus made amends for his luckless run in the valuable Cable & Wireless Stakes over 1300 metres on July 5 when failing by a length to make it five in a row, this after missing the break and experiencing traffic problems as the Hussey-trained THEIA stole a march.
A bay gelding by Pat N Jac out of the Texas Prospector mare Zuki Princess, JACK DE PRINCE is owned jointly by DaCosta, Francis Barnett and Edison Chai and bred by Chai and Robert Girvan.
In other trophy races, THE ENTERTAINER running at odds of 7-1 with apprentice Douglas Badaloo riding for owner/trainer Fernando Geddes, made most to win the closing JLA Trophy (4-y-o and up maidens) over the straight five course, while the DaCosta-trained YOUNG FOR ALL under leading all-time jockey Winston Griffiths, led home stable-companion GLORIOUS STAR by three lengths in the 3-y-o and up overnight allowance for the Joseph Ashenheim Memorial Bowl over 2000 metres.
Free running THAT'S MY NUMBER (4-5) romped the Hugh Levy Jr. Trophy over 1300 metres with top apprentice Paul Francis riding for in-form trainer Richie Todd.
