LONDON, CMC:

JAMAICA INTERNATIONAL Ricardo Fuller led a quartet of Caribbean scorers as football in Britain fully started its 2003/2004 season with the opening day of the Premiership yesterday.

Fuller helped Preston North End draw 1-1 with Wigan in the First Division, while in Division Two, his Reggae Boyz teammate Onandi Lowe and Vincentian Rodney Jack netted for Rushden and Diamonds to beat Plymouth, and Trinidadian Hector Sam's strike lifted Wrexham to victory over Notts County.

Fans at Wigan's JJB Stadium watched two goals in the last four minutes.

Fuller, who missed the second half of last season with a knee injury, looked to have snatched all three points for Preston when he headed home Graham Alexander's corner in the 86th minute, but Lee McCulloch rescued a point for Wigan in the 89th minute.

Substitute Sam scored Wrexham's opening goal of the season, converting a cross from his T&T international teammate Carlos Edwards for a 1-0 win over Notts County at Meadow Lane.

At Nene Park, Jack, a new signing from Crewe, and Lowe, tormented Plymouth as last year's Division Three champions Rushden and Diamonds snatched their first win in the Second Division with a 2-1 scoreline.

Lowe headed in a cross by Gary Mills in the 54th minute before Jack latched onto a bad back pass from Lee Hodges in the 56th minute, before beating Romain Larrieu in the visitors' goal.

Plymouth reduced the lead when Tony Capaldi scored in the 77th minute, but the Diamonds, with Jamaica international Paul Hall also in their line up, stayed strong for the win.

In Scotland, Jamaica international Theodore Whitmore was impressive in midfield for his new club Livingston as they beat Motherwell 1-0 on a Derek Lilley goal.
