THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT'S AMAZING to see how polluted our little island has become.
Jamaicans have always had the notion that burning their backyard rubbish is a way of getting rid of it although the garbage truck comes by and does regular collection.
When they sweep, which is often, the first thing they do is to light up and this will continue over a period of time until you have a mountain of burnt debris just lying around.
They, however, do not take into consideration the fact that not only is the constant inhalation of the smoke harmful, but there is damage being done to the ozone layer. Often these burnings are done without any consideration to persons living nearby. Everywhere you go, you're bound to come upon some sort of smoke emitting from garbage being burnt, maybe in an open lot, on the sidewalk or in somebody's backyard.
I'm suggesting that some sort of law be passed to stop these backyard garbage burning and also to educate people on the dangers this is causing our Mother Earth.
I am, etc.,
