THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM a Jamaican living overseas and I had the great pleasure of being on vacation in Jamaica during the recent Emancipation/Independence celebration. It was the first time in 15 years that I was able to participate in the independence celebration at home.
It was really great to once again be engulfed in the Jamaican cultural celebration. I really felt like I had rediscovered a part of me that had been lost for quite some time.
It was also great to hear the old voices on RJR that I grew up with: Alan Magnus, Dorraine Samuels, Neville Willoughby etc. The independence day Good Morning Man Show with Alan Magnus and Dorraine Samuels was a gem. I truly enjoyed it. My visit to the Denbigh Show Ground on Monday, August 4 with my son brought back many pleasant memories of growing up in the May Pen/Denbigh area. It felt good giving my son a chance to experience a part of my childhood roots.
Finally, I would like to extend kudos to all the individuals, businesses and organisations who are involved in the revitalisation of the town of May Pen. It is great to see the politicians, citizens, businesses and whoever else is involved, working together to make May Pen look beautiful once again. Two years ago when I visited the town was dirty and overrun by vendors. The buildings looked rundown and the overall appearance of the town was one in decline.
The transition has once again made me proud to say May Pen is the place where I lived and grew up as a child and a young adult. Many of the old businesses that existed when I lived in May Pen have gone, but it is great to see that the many new businesses that have sprung up and brought new life to May Pen and Denbigh.
I am, etc.,
