27 held in police raid
published: Wednesday | August 20, 2003

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

MORE THAN 27 persons, including two women, were taken into custody yesterday, following a massive snap raid by the police, in the troubled communities of east Kingston.

"These persons will be processed and if they are not wanted by the police, they will be released," said Superintendent Calvin Benjamin, Area 4 Crime Officer.

Led by Senior Superintendent Donald Pusey of the Special Anti Crime Task Force (SACTF), Superintendents Benjamin, Artice Brown-Getton and Deputy Superintendent Michael Ellis, the police party concentrated on the area bordered by Water, Mitchell, Margaret and Bryden streets, where the rival factions are said to be from.

"One person was held with a quantity of ganja and there is no doubt about it, he will be charged," said Supt. Benjamin.

Despite not finding any illegal guns, SSP Pusey said yesterday's operation has provided the police with the intelligence they need to conduct further operations in the affected communities.

OUTBREAK OF GUN VIOLENCE

Since last Friday there has been an outbreak of gun violence in the respective areas, leaving at least one man shot and killed and another nursing gunshot wounds.

An ex-soldier is said to head the list of suspects whom the police believe are involved in the shooting.

According to Supt. Benjamin, warrants have been prepared for the arrest of the suspects.

The police say they are still unable to state the motive behind this fresh wave of violence in the east Kingston area.
