In-bond merchants clear the air
published: Wednesday | August 20, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I REFER to the editorial of Tuesday, August 12, 2003 "Enforce the laws", and would like to point out an inaccuracy contained therein.

While four souvenir store operators have been charged under the Copyright and Trademark Act, for the alleged illegal use of Bob Marley's image on T-shirts and other souvenir items, I would like to advise that these merchants are not members of the In Bond Merchants' Association, nor are they involved in the in-bond or duty-free trade.

I would also like to point out that there is a distinct difference between a souvenir shop and a licensed in-bond or duty-free establishment and therefore a well-defined difference in the range of items offered for sales to visitors.

Since there has been no communication between your newspaper and our association, we must assume that the reporter who first reported the story and your editorial writer never took the time to fully investigate the facts in relation to the alleged incident and prosecution.

I would therefore be grateful if you would retract that part of your editorial that identifies the persons charged as being "in-bond merchants".

I am, etc.,

KUMAR SAMTANI

President

In Bond Merchants'

Association

P.O. Box 538, Montego Bay
