JAMAICA WILL today seek to redeem themselves in individual competition at the Caribbean Table Tennis Championships at the University of Technology after a dismal showing in the doubles yesterday.
Today's schedule sees the playing of quarter-final and semi-final doubles starting at 10:00 a.m before the second session at 4:00 p.m. which will feature singles matches.
Doubles action highlighted yesterday's third day and saw only two Jamaican men's pairs reaching the quarter-final stages.
Keith Evans and Darryl Strachan beat the Guyanese pair of Matthew Khan and Paul Musa 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 11-2 before going down to Lin Ju and Roberto Brito of the Dominican Republic 9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 13-11.
The other team of Darren Blake and Nigel Webb stopped Vincentian Sean Stanley and Dominican Donald Curuette 11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6 before engaging in a tight battle with Trinidadians Dexter St Louis and Anthony Browne who came out on top 14-12, 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4.
The other locals competing in the men's doubles did not fare as well, getting only as far as the second round. Kane Watson and Gavin Hylton were defeated in straight sets by Anthony Valero and Carlos Sosa of the Dominican Republic. The score was 11-3, 11-9, 11-4.
Rudolph Sinclair and Rohan Schloss won two sets in their game against Ronaldi Vos and Eldert van der Hout of Curacao but went down 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8.
The game was just as tight between the pair of Nicardo Clarke and Samuel Lamont who were beaten by Puerto Ricans Santiago Coste and Juan Revelles.
The Jamaicans won the first set 6-11 but lost the second 12-10.
LOCALS RALLIED
The Puerto Ricans took the third easily with 11-2 but the locals rallied to win the next 8-11 and subjecting the visitors to an even more exciting duel in the deciding set before conceding defeat on 17-15.
Jamaica's women failed to go beyond the first round.
Nina Burton and Collette Palmer started well but were beaten 6-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 by Alena Edwards and Krystle Harvey of Trinidad & Tobago.
Andrea Wadsworth and Michelle Harris lost 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 to Barbadians Sabrina Worrell and Krystle Harvey while Jodi-Ann Adams and Kaydian Carney, despite a strong rally in the second and fourth sets, went down 11-9, 3-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6 to Unica Velox (St Vincent) and Sherley Zhou (Dominican Republic).
Wu Xue and Olga Vila of the Dominican republic will contest the women's doubles final this morning with Maria Masta and Yamileth Arasme of Venezuela.
Barbados, the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago advanced to the mixed doubles quarter-finals after recording victories in their respective games.
Highly-rated men's singles player Trevor Farley and Ann Reid ensured Barbados a place in that round with an 11-5, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6 victory over Jamaiaca's Nina Burton and Nigel Webb.
Trinidad and Tobago's St Louis and his partner Chung joined forces to overcome Guyana's Blake and Khan 11-9, 11-6, 11-3.
The Dominican Republic qualified two pairs after beating Venezuela and Barbados.
