Know your history
published: Thursday | August 21, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE not had the opportunity to see the Emancipation statue (which I am sure is quite lovely). I will certainly do so the next time that I am home. I, however, wanted to point out to the 'artist' of the letter entitled 'Give the statue a chance', that 'David' is certainly not 'thousands of years old'. I unfortunately am not one to claim any sort of artistic bent, but I am aware that it was commissioned in 1501 and completed in 1504.

I do agree with her sentiment about allowing time to reflect on the statue before condemning it. But, when you state that you are an artist as well as one who has visited major works of art in international cities then please know your history!

I am, etc.,
