Unfair charges
published: Thursday | August 21, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I recently received a shirt and trousers from my son in New York, which were brought down by Fedex.

The value of the goods is US$75 and Fedex had to pay the equivalent of US$50 to the Jamaica Customs to clear the goods.

I think that to have to pay 67 per cent for charges for a gift is iniquitous and I seriously question whether all commercial shipments of garments imported into Jamaica are paying this percentage to clear their goods.

I have brought this to the attention of the public as I feel the government has unfairly taxed an individual.

I am, etc.,
