Pedestrians in grave danger
published: Thursday | August 21, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PEDESTRIANS GENERALLY and, in particular, small children, are in mortal danger when using pedestrian crossings today. In the majority of cases the regulation road markings of the crossings are badly faded, some almost totally obliterated, while in a number of cases there are no regulation black-and-yellow posts topped with a yellow orb to indicate the existence of a crossing.

In many instances, the unsuspecting motorist does not realise that a pedestrian crossing exists until he/she sees a person stepping off the sidewalk into the path of his/her approaching vehicle.

In these days of a greatly increased volume of vehicular traffic and an increased population, the Government of the country should show greater concern for the safety of its citizens by at least erecting and maintaining adequate road traffic signs for their regulation and protection.

It is my hope that the Government will repair and repaint all the posts indicating pedestrian crossings, as well as the guideline markings on the road surface throughout the Corporate Area, before the new school year begins.

I am, etc.,

CONCERNED CITIZEN

Kingston
