THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE in response to a letter from Tameka Cooke who complains of the state of disrepair of the roads in Vineyard Town. Understandably, she places this undesirable situation at the feet of the Member of Parliament.
I will be sending to Ms. Cooke by e-mail all my correspondences with the National Works Agency, the body responsible for the repairs of these roads. The officials in the agency can attest to the fact that, even before becoming the Member of Parliament, I have been constantly making representation about these roads. One outcome was the patching of some, but this was inadequate.
In the most recent correspondence, the NWA gave the assurance that they would attempt to develop even some interim programme to address some of the problems. This has not yet been done.
That I am pressuring the NWA is perhaps of cold comfort to the citizens of Vineyard Town. However, this is the disjuncture between the representational responsibility of the Member of Parliament and the attainment of the desired outcome.
MPs do not have independent sources of financing and must await action by the relevant agencies.
I will continue to make representation to the NWA and I am confident that I will have a positive and, hopefully timely response.
I am, etc.,
MAXINE HENRY-WILSON
Member of Parliament
