THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM Wesley Frater founder and director of Tournament of Champions, Inc.
TOC, Inc. is a sports management firm in the United States that owns various basketball events. I read your paper (sports) daily on the Internet and notice the surprising failure to cover basketball. As a Jamaican operating a sports firm in the United States, I can inform Jamaicans that basketball especially in South Florida is played by a large number of Jamaicans. If the same effort was placed to invite Jamaicans to represent their country in basketball. I expect Jamaica to be a powerhouse internationally in the sport of basketball.
I am the director of the Nike All-Star Game in Florida and each year I have noticed at least 3 to 4 Jamaicans making this all-star game of 10 players. The University of Miami, Florida State and Florida all have Jamaican-born players on their rosters.
I really hope and pray that your federation and powers that be in Jamaica consider the same respect given to table tennis and other sports to basketball. Basketball is an international sport and this would bring Jamaica great international respect. I have performed camps at Knox College and will again this October be in Ocho Rios. There is no doubt in my mind that you have all the young talent good enough to train into good high school, college and potential professional players.
I am, etc.,
WESLEY FRATER
