Ja under severe weather alert
published: Monday | August 25, 2003

THE NATIONAL Meteorological Service has expanded its severe weather alert for all parishes until 5 o'clock this morning as a result of showers expected to be generated by a tropical wave that has been moving across the central Caribbean.

In a release issued at 5 p.m. yesterday, the Met Office said the tropical wave, remnants of Tropical Depression Nine, has been in the vicinity of Jamaica throughout yesterday and continued to drift towards the west with an area of unstable weather that extends towards the north and east.

THUNDERSHOWERS

It said showers and thundershowers were expected over sections of the island last night and could be heavy at times. Gusty winds and choppy seas were also likely over territorial waters and therefore fishers and other marine interests should continue to exercise caution.

Earlier, the Meteorological Office issued a severe weather alert for Trelawny, St. Ann, St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon and Manchester, but up to press time there were no reports of flooding.

Other reports said the tropical wave remained poorly organised over Hispaniola, Eastern Cuba, Jamaica and adjacent waters, but conditions may become slightly more favourable for development over the next few days.
