Crashes kill four

FOUR PERSONS were killed in separate motor vehicle accidents in four parishes on Friday and Saturday.

They have been identified as: Andrew Gifford, 26, of Whithorn, Westmoreland; Dexter Joseph, 34, of Maverley, Kingston 20; Herman Murray, 48, of Springfield Road, St. Thomas, and Kirk Chambers, 25, of Brunswick Avenue, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

The Whithorn police reported that about 7:50 a.m. on Saturday, Mr. Gifford, who is employed to Tyres-R-Us in Savanna-la-Mar, was driving a Toyota Hiace minibus along the Whithorn main road when the vehicle collided with a Sedan Atkinson motor truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr. Gifford received multiple injuries and was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.

Police reported that Mr. Joseph was riding his Honda motorcycle along Beechwood Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday when on reaching the intersection with Lyndhurst Road, it collided with a truck that was being driven by Everton Elliott, of Emmanuel Royal Place, Spanish Town. Mr. Joseph sustained head injuries and died at the scene.

COLLISION WITH TRUCK

Mr. Murray was driving his Toyota Camry motor car along the Albion main road in St. Thomas towards Kingston about 6 a.m. on Friday when it collided with a truck. Police said the accident occurred because of improper overtaking by another motorist driving a Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck. Mr. Murray died on the spot. The driver of the pick-up did not stop, police said.

Mr. Chambers was also killed on Friday when his motorcycle collided with a car on the Dunbeholden main road in St. Catherine. The police reported that he was riding a Honda motorcycle when on reaching 8 West, Greater Portmore, he was involved in a collision with a Honda Civic motor car travelling in the opposite direction. He sustained head injuries and died at the Spanish Town Hospital.
