Feelings of discomfort
published: Monday | August 25, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DURING MY recent visit home, I visited the statue in Emancipation Park. It is not offensive to me personally, but made my young son uncomfortable.

I believe other young children and seniors, as well as deeply religious persons, may be uncomfortable with this, and their feelings should be considered since this a public display.

My personal issue is that I do not see how statues of black nude persons indicate Emancipation. While I was in school in Jamaica, I learned that the slaves were stripped to be auctioned off. I do not think the slaves at the time considered nudity as freedom.

I am, etc.,
