Canasol as boost for the economy
published: Wednesday | August 27, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

EVERY TIME I hear that the police have burned several acres of fully grown ganja plants I say to myself: What a pity this quantity of raw material did not reach the manufacturers of CANASOL one of the eye drops prescribed for patients suffering from glaucoma.

I am putting my thoughts in writing today for more than one reason.

A past student of mine who is a medical doctor practising in the United States told me how effective CANASOL was when he prescribed it.

There is talk about legalising the use of ganja. Making it legal will only reduce its value and increase the number of street people.

CANASOL is a prescription drug manufactured in Jamaica. There is enough raw material here to supply the world. Increased production of CANASOL for sale in the overseas market would help to pull the country out of the economic bind in which it finds itself.

Jamaicans have a way of finding a loophole. Whoever is caught exporting ganja should serve a mandatory suspended sentence of assisting incarcerated prisoners to do community service and have their assets frozen.

This may be a deterrent.

I am, etc.,

L. ANDERSON
