JAMAICA SENIOR netball team captain Oberon Pitterson-Dunn leaves the island this week to pursue a 12-week coaching scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
Pitterson-Dunn is one of two local players who will benefit from scholarships granted by the AIS.
She will be based at Institute in Canberra working under the supervision of Norma Plummer, who is the head coach of the AIS netball programme, and will also be working with the under-21 netball squad.
The national captain and Jamaica basketball representative is expected to complete the level one coaching course and the level two coaching principals.
Pitterson's expenses, including airfare, accommodation, meals and a per diem, will be borne by Australia.
International Federation of Netball Associations president Molly Rhone, who also heads the Jamaica Netball Association, was pleased that Jamaica was able to secure two.
"It has always been our intention to get some of our players properly trained so that they can work in the coaching programme. We sought to get scholarships form the more developed countries that have these kinds of institutes and programmes," Rhone said.
"I know they get requests from a lot of countries and I'm pleased that two places were offered to Jamaica. I'm very happy they have said yes," she said.
She said discussions were initiated from the Commonwealth Games in England last year and only came through just before the World Netball Championship held here in July.
The second scholarship recipient will be announced shortly.
