Protect our dairy industry

THE EDITOR: Sir, ONCE UPON a time, Jamaica had a thriving dairy industry - the envy of the Caribbean. As recently as a decade ago, dairy farmers produced more than 50,000 metric tons of milk. Subsidised imports from the advanced milk-producing nations have weakened Jamaica's dairy industry which has only recently shown signs of reviving. Now it appears the US Department of Agriculture is planning to dump a 4,500 mt milk powder donation on the country. That translates into almost 30 percent of current production plus imports! Isn't it time for the Government of Jamaica to think about the country's farmers instead of kow-towing to the US and helping that country's farmers stay rich?
