War is such a waste!

THE EDITOR, Sir: SECRETARY OF State Colin L. Powell said recently that the United States and other council members would explore the language of a resolution that would call on members of the United Nations to "do more" to assist the American efforts in Iraq. Speaking at United Nations headquarters in New York after a meeting with Secretary General Kofi Annan, Mr. Powell said, ''The president has always felt the U.N. has a vital role to play.'' Mr. Annan said the United Nations would not send its own peacekeepers - the United Nations' ''blue helmets'' - to serve in Iraq. Of course, the U.S. economy is in such a sorry state right now that not even the billions spent on this recent war in Iraq will stimulate it very much or for very long. With a national debt of more than $6.5 trillion, they're just digging themselves deeper into the hole, and if the rest of the world ever loses confidence in their ability to repay, they could wind up in the same state as poor Argentina. Imagine what Iraq could have done with all those billions of dollars which were spent on destroying it! Imagine the food it could have bought, the water treatment plants it could have built, the medicine it could have purchased to help heal its sick and suffering. War is such a waste!
