By Erica James-King, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

A TAXI operator died violentlyin St. James on the weekend. He is Linval 'Ricky Chin' Evans, 37, of Granville.

Evans's life was snuffed out by unknown assailants in Cornwall Courts, St. James. Up to press time, the Mount Salem police who are investigating, were not able to determine a motive for the killing.

Reports are that about 9.25 p.m. on Saturday, residents heard gunshots in the Cornwall Courts area and called the police who found Evans lying on his back with a gunshot wound. Several cartridge casings were found at the scene.

Evans was pronounced dead on arrival at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, Montego Bay. The body was removed to the morgue for post mortem examination.

Evans's car was later found on the Salt Spring main road. Evans's death brings to 62, the number of persons murdered in St. James since the start of the year.

The police said they shot a man dead on Saturday after he wounded three persons, including a policeman, with a machete, in Montego Bay.

According to the police, about 5.50 p.m. two police constables went to Barnett Street, to investigate a report.

On their arrival they saw a man using a machete to wound two persons. The policemen intervened and one was chopped on the hand by the machete wielder.

The other policeman then fired a shot which hit the suspect. The four injured persons were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where the machete wielder died while undergoing treatment. The other persons were treated and released.

The dead man is unidentified. The Montego Bay police are investigating.
