Apologies and good journalism

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I DID not agree with Senator Bruce Golding when he left the JLP to form the NDM, but I agree with the principled position he has taken in the face of HOT 102's apology. I understand Mr. Blythe's (chairman of HOT 102 as a businessman and a successful one at that) reasons for the apology, which was obviously grounded on the principles that an apology is often honourable and desirable to avoid litigation and the fool and his money are soon parted. However, if Mr. Golding's statement was not in breach of any law as a presenter, the apology was most inappropriate as it flies in the face of freedom of expression and might even sow the seed for the destruction of HOT 102 and CVM, two of my favourites.
I think Mr. Blythe should withdraw the apology and invite Mr. Golding to resume his programme in the national interest and in the interest of freedom of the press and good journalism.
