Buffoonery style of theatre
published: Wednesday | September 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WENT to see the Oliver Large Abroad show at Centre Stage Theatre in New Kingston on Sunday and I was very disappointed in that they are still caught in the 80s in the style of acting and delivery of material.

The script is boring (yawn) and was not worth my money but as I was with visitors, I felt I had to sit through it. Also, the visitors were embarrassed that we are still into that type of buffoonery style of theatre where the actors shout at each other and at the audience. It is time we get into doing a good play with a good plot for the price they are charging to enter.

I encourage the producers at JAMBIZ to take a break and 'wheel and come again' and reconsider taking this obviously under-rehearsed and poorly scripted show abroad to show Jamaicans overseas.

I thank God for the likes of playwrights like Trevor Rhone, David Heron and Aston Cooke for their intelligent works over the years. I challenge the Jamaica Dramatic Artist Association to review the works being staged by its members and do better for us the paying public.

I am, etc.,
