THE EDITOR, Sir:
THIS IS an open letter to His Worship, Desmond McKenzie, Mayor of Kingston.
Dear Mayor McKenzie,
I CONGRATULATE you upon your election as Mayor of the City of Kingston and commend you for the energetic approach and responsible demeanour you have brought to the Office.
Your proactive bipartisan approach in identifying urban problems and your determination to utilise the resources of your office to make positive changes deserve the wholehearted support of all Jamaicans. I share your concerns for the redevelopment of the City of Kingston, and I would like to refer you to my article which was published in The Gleaner of March 21, 2003, as the Letter of the Day under the title, 'Save the Nation's Capital City'.
Commendations and suggestions, however sincere, cannot remove the trash and garbage from the streets or clean a drainage system. You will need funds for this extensive urban project and the Government will not be able to provide all the necessary funds. You must, therefore, appeal to Jamaicans everywhere to help in the rebuilding of our Capital City.
As a retired university professor, I have very little to give, but I would like to encourage you to start an official fund-raising drive as soon as possible to assist in the development of the city, and on that premise I am committed to make an initial contribution US$1,000.
Please continue the good work!
I am, etc.,
DONALD G. MORGAN
