JLP mayors to set first-year agenda
published: Wednesday | September 3, 2003

THE JAMAICA Labour Party's (JLP) Council of Mayors is to draft an agenda of work they plan to have accomplished within the first year of their administration for presentation to their respective councils.

This decision was taken at Monday's second monthly meeting of the Mayor's Council, composed of the mayors of the 12 Parish Councils controlled by the JLP. The meeting was held at the Knutsford Court Hotel, New Kingston.

The mayors also stated that they are carrying out investigations into submissions for payments and, in cases where their investigations have revealed that "a substantial amount" of the work has not been done," they are stopping payment until the matter is fully dealt with.

However, the meeting was told that at least one mayor has been warned by the police that there is a threat against his life for stopping payments, according to a statement from the JLP's Belmont Road headquarters. JLP Leader, Edward Seaga, would not disclose the name of the mayor, but said that the person would make his own public declarations soon.

DISAPPEARED

Mayor of St. Ann's Bay, Delroy Giscombe, reported that his Council was still unable to locate five computers with important data, which disappeared from the Council office after the recent Local Government elections on June 19. The mayor said that unavailability of the computers and software containing vital information about contracts and payments has hampered his investigations.

The Mayors also expressed concern about the collection of solid waste in their parishes. They are concerned that major towns are still suffering from a system of poor garbage collection, which they have said they are ill-equipped to deal with. They have blamed the garbage collection problems on the inefficiency of the National Solid Waste Management Agency and its regional bodies, North Eastern Parks and Markets, Western Parks and Markets and Southern Parks and Markets, who they have accused of being derelict in the carrying out of their duties.
