Fleeced by cops

THE EDITOR, Sir:

REGARDING YOUR article dated August 27 on police corruption; I have firsthand knowledge of this. During my last visit to Jamaica, on August 3, 2003, I was pulled over and was accused of going through a red light. I was told if I give them some American money they would not write me a ticket or I would have to come back to Jamaica for a later court date.

To prevent further hassle I was intimidated into giving them $1000. That was all the cash I had on me.
