Computer training for Yallahs Primary students
published: Friday | September 5, 2003

MORE THAN 1,500 students of the Yallahs Primary School in St. Thomas will have access to computer training this school year, as the institution has received 10 computers from SCS Management Company Limited.

The computers, which are valued at over $100,000, have been installed at the school and students are expected to begin classes in Information Technology (IT) next Monday, September 8.

Harry Stoddart, managing director of SCS Management Company, said he was happy to donate the computers, emphasising that it was important to introduce IT to students at an early stage in order to prepare them for the secondary level.

"By the end of September, we are expected to bring in another 10 computers and that would be sufficient to take care of the school's population," he said in a recent JIS interview.

DONATING

Mr. Stoddart pointed out that the idea for donating the computers came after he visited the school and saw only one computer, which was malfunctioning at the time. "We saw the need and made a proposal to the vice-principal, who willingly accepted our offer," he said.

The vice-principal, Maurice Bogle, told JIS News that he was pleased with the gift, noting that students from Grades 1 to 6 as well as teachers, would have access to the computers once per week.

He noted that a committee had been set up to ensure the security and proper use of the computers, which would be maintained by SCS Management Company Limited.
