Haynes on the warpath
published: Friday | September 5, 2003

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

NATIONAL SENIOR cricket coach Robert Haynes yesterday lashed Wavell Hinds' XI after a poor batting display against Robert Samuels' XI on final day of their two-day 50-over per side Red Stripe Bowl preparation match at Melbourne Oval.

"I was not happy with Hinds' XIs' batting," Haynes said. "I did not think Hinds' XI batsmen approached the game the right way," he said.

Robert Samuels' XI won by 101 runs.

"Even if you don't get 219 runs, it would be good for them to try and get as close to the total as possible and for them even to get a 60 or 70 not out, just to build confidence, I did not see that," he said.

The coach, who played 65 first-class matches said the ball was in the players court and added: "it's now for them to work things out, try and read the game of cricket, look at what they need to do and what they have to do.

MAKE UP NUMBERS

"If you are coming here just to make up numbers, you are coming to the wrong place. You should be here to try and achieve your goals."

Haynes said after Hinds got out with the sixth ball of the innings, "the youngsters who should have stood up and bat" did not apply themselves. "Marlon Samuels was really looking good, but he got run out," he said.

"I think the youngsters should have learnt something from this day, where they would go out there and try and apply themselves", said Haynes.

Resuming on their overnight 170 for three (29.4 overs), Samuels' XI reached 219 for five from 40 overs, to which Hinds' XI replied with 118 all out in 33.5 overs.

Robert Samuels, 35, and Lorenzo Ingram, 18, were the batsmen out yesterday after Chris Gayle, 71, Shawn Findlay, 31, and Tamar Lambert, 28, departed on the rain-shortened opening day.

The unbeaten batsmen for Samuels' XI yesterday were Carlton Baugh Jr., 17, and Odean Brown, six. Vinard Woolcock 2-32, Bevon Brown, 1-30, and David Bernard Jr., 1-26, were the wicket takers.

In reply, fast bowler Evan McInnis picked up the wickets of Hinds, zero, and Donovan Pagon, eight, to have Hinds' XI reeling at nine for two.

NEVER RECOVERED

Despite a 46-run third-wicket stand between Bernard Jr., 16, and Marlon Samuels, 28, Hinds' XI never recovered when both went with the score a 55.

Keith Hibbert, 39, and Vinard Woolcock, 21 not out, featured in a 57-run fifth wicket stand but he introduction of off-spinner Roman Hutchinson crushed the Hinds' XI tail. They lost their final seven wickets for six runs.

Hutchinson finished with 4-8 off 4.5 overs, McInnis 2-34, legspinner Odean Brown 2-5 and Gayle 1-9.
