Crime Plan with education
published: Sunday | September 7, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CRIME IS once again atop the national agenda as it has been for sometime now. Crime is a mirror reflection of our social problems; the remedy to which is stimulating and investing in education; ultimately creating opportunities.

Crime initiatives at present may require a substantial amount of Government funding, however the focus should be more balanced towards dealing with our social issues.

The Crime Action Plan needs a deeper social insight. This insight will point directly to our island's educational needs; not only on a formal basis; but on a fresh, creative basis. It is time for our institutions and administrative structures to respond dynamically to the needs (as they are) of our people. This is opposite to the attempt of enforcing a superstructure demanding compliance, regardless of people's situation and circumstances, causing social isolation, breeding elements for crime.

Investing in fresh, new and radical educational initiatives is the ideal way to build and respond to people who are prone to enter into the realms of criminality. Let's go full scale into a revolutionary educational movement and yield sustained results. Let's stop the band-aid treatment, reflected in the militaristic focus of the crime plan and address the root causes of crime, through deliverance of a radical and revolutionary educational plan, responding to the needs out there which aid in social renewal.

Business as usual is just not working, we are simply working on the fruits of the problem not the roots.

I am etc.,
