Powell to lead Jamaicans at Grand Prix meet
published: Sunday | September 7, 2003

NATIONAL 100 METRES champion Asafa Powell heads a list of three Jamaican athletes down to complete in today's 2003 Rieti/IAAF Grand Prix I Meeting in Italy.

Powell, who was ousted from the men's 100 metres in Paris when the sensitive false start equipment ruled that he and American Jon Drummond had prematurely moved in their blocks, will be joined today by Dean Griffits and Ricardo Williams.

The 20-year-old Powell, fresh from his career-best run to capture the men's 100 metres at Friday's IAAF's Golden League season finale, the Memorial Van Damme meet, will against face the likes of Americans Shawn Crawford, Coby Miller and Bernard Williams along with Obadele Thompson of Barbados and Italy's Francesco Scuderi.

Meanwhile, Williams will be looking to bounce back from his disappointing sixth finish at the Memorial Van Damme meet when he faces the starter in the men's 200m. Williams, who finished second to Usain Bolt at the National Championships, will face-off with the second fastest man in the world this year, Shawn Crawford of the US.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Griffiths is expected to face a stern test against world No. 1 and Pan American Games and World Championships gold medallist Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic.
