DEFENDING MANNING Cup champions Norman Manley narrowly survived the will of Donald Quarrie in yesterday's Group A encounter at the Tinson Pen field.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw after Norman Manley conceded an early goal but scored one of their own in the latter stages of the game.
Initially, Norman Manley played a more controlled game and had a solid defence. However, in the 20th minute Horatio Taffe of Donald Quarrie received a brilliant pass from Kemar Cockburn in the midfield to exploit a small defensive lapse.
Norman Manley came out attacking in the second half and earned a number of chances to score. In the 81st minute, Bryan Baylis capitalised through a penalty due to a handball violation. Energised by Baylis' equaliser and the home fans, Norman Manley earnestly attacked goalkeeper Jonathan Walker but the score remained the same.
Alrick Clarke, coach of Norman Manley, said his guys got off to a slow start but began to attack later on and "that is a good sign".
Donald Quarrie's coach, Owen Wright, was also fairly satisfied wit his team's performance. "It was a good game for us. We came out and got a point from the defending champions and we are confident we are going to do well this year," he said.
