Lara to speak at Carib Entrepreneur Conference
published: Sunday | September 14, 2003

Lara

WEST INDIES Cricket Captain Brian Lara will be one of the featured speakers at the 7th annual Caribbean Entrepreneur of the Year (CEOY) Conference in Jamaica on September 26 and 27.

The champion batsman will address business people from across the region on the "Leadership Challenge" relating practices implemented on the cricket pitch to the world of business.

Leadership techniques and the ability to influence a group towards the achievement of goals are key challenges for today's entrepreneurs, more so in the face of adverse conditions. Lara will share his experience on issues such as leading by example, and dealing with adversity.

Participants will learn about the changes he made to his leadership style from his first captaincy to the second as well as the personal adjustments which have allowed him to return to the top of the world batting ranks and guide the West Indies team back to respectability.

The general discussion will focus on issues that are key to successful leadership such as timing, team-building, managing diversity and recognition and reward. The cricket captain will also touch on challenges familiar to many business leaders such as inspiring team members and helping them to see the "big picture".

The 34-year-old Trinidadian will be only one of several speakers at the CEOY Conference, supported by platinum sponsor, Republic Bank. The roster includes the 2002 Ernst & Young World Entrepre-neur of the Year, Stefan Wilsmeier from Germany; and Dr. Patrick Antoine, Ambassador, External Trade Negotiator and CARICOM's Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) who will be discussing the opportunities that the FTAA will bring to the Caribbean.
