'Cradle of Life' soundtrack an average effort
published: Wednesday | September 17, 2003

Album: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life

Type: Movie soundtrack

Artistes: Various

CLOCKING IN at 1 hour, nine minutes and 47 seconds, this soundtrack is a decidedly mixed bag. Heavy on the rock and electronica, you are occasionally knocked for a loop when the music switches direction on you out of the blue.

In addition, a few of the songs were old before the disc was released, such as Lunatic Calm's Leave You Far Behind, which detracts from the listening experience somewhat.

Sometimes more of a mess than anything else, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life is better absorbed in bits and pieces as opposed to a single session, since the progression of dark rock tracks can be a bit wearing.

Standout songs include Nadirah 'Nadz' Seid's I Hate This, Alan Silvestri's Pandora's Box and Dave A. Stewart's Flight To Freedom. Seid's effort was revved up by producer Ned Douglas while oddly enough at the end of the album, where the disc makes another of those dizzying twists, this time into orchestral music is Pandora's Box and Dave A. Stewart's Flight To Freedom, which is bathed in electric guitar and is strangely moving.

Also worthy of a listen or two is Sinead O'Connor on the Carmen Rizzo Stateside West Chillout mix of Conjure One's Tears From The Moon.

Another puzzling aspect is the absence of Korn's Did My Time, for which a video was made that included the movie's star, Angelina Jolie, as well as scenes from the movie itself - which is a shame, since the soundtrack lacks a really good rock track.

Overall, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life movie soundtrack is for the most part an average effort, with the exceptions of the songs previously mentioned, and is a nice to disc to have, but not one you will probably wear out on your CD player.
