A NICE cup of green tea, with a touch of lemon or perhaps some fine Jamaican honey, is a nice way to slow down a hectic day but green tea may be able to do more than that - researchers believe that it could boost your bladder health.
A type of catechin, a compound found in green tea, is believed to be the agent that inhibits the growth of bladder cancer. The researchers from the Department of Urology, Medical College of Ohio, injected the compound epigallocatechin-3-gallate, EGCG, (the type of catechin which is a green tea derivative) directly into the cells, blocking their growth.
The experiment used a control group of rats along with the experimental group. The clonal assays showed a time dose related response to EGCG. Intravesical instillation of EGCG inhibits the growth of AY-27 rat transitional cells implanted in this model.
You may also be able to control other risk factors for bladder cancer for example, it has been estimated that smoking is responsible for almost
one-half of this type of cancer deaths in men. Other risks factors include being male, over age 50, family history of bladder cancer and being African- American.
