Upliftment of the majority
published: Wednesday | September 17, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WOULD like to remind the Government and the Opposition that, in the last analysis, policies should focus mainly on the social and economical upliftment of the majority with special reference to the poor before there can be meaningful creation and maintenance of economic growth through a vibrant economy which breeds entrepreneurs. Society sees successful entrepreneurs as role models whose profits have been increasing because of the increased prosperity of the majority.

Public administrators cannot continue to parade economic growth which is calculated as prosperity for only a few and income per capita on the basis of this prosperity. This is self-deception and deception of the unfortunates and ultimately fall of governments. It reminds me of the lies of statistics, the ultimate degree of lies and by necessary implication, Statin's measures of inflation which every consumer, including the housewife, knows bears no relationship to the prices of goods and services which should be in the basket in today's culture.

When it comes to the police force, there should be no reminder that it was created for the prevention and detection of crimes as well as the protection of life and property and there is no reason why this should not remain on the frontburner of the force and the forefront of any policy.

I am, etc.,

OWEN CROSBIE
