Portmore school beefs up security
published: Wednesday | September 17, 2003

THE GREATER Portmore High School in St. Catherine has tightened security following an incident last week, which involved a tussle between an ex-student and a teacher at the school.

Aurleen Williams, the school's principal, said yesterday that security and screening processes at the gate to the school compound have been beefed up since last Wednesday, when a fight developed between a male teacher and a recently expelled student, who was allowed to enter the school when he should have not been given entrance.

The tussle resulted when the teacher attempted to get the 17-year-old boy to leave the school compound and the boy resisted. The teacher ended up being hit and later kicked by the young man during their struggle, which was witnessed by students leaving school for the day.

Mrs Williams said the teacher later made a report to the police and the boy was arrested.

It was not immediately clear why the student returned to the school after being expelled in May for verbally abusing a vice-principal.

The number of violent acts in schools have been growing over the last few years. These have been linked with student indiscipline and have taken a toll on both teachers and administrators.
