Jamaican trade links to be upgraded
published: Friday | September 19, 2003

By Andrew Smith, Staff Reporter

BETWEEN today and Sunday, China's Foreign Minister, His Excellency Li Xhaoxing, will be in Jamaica on an official visit. While here, he will meet with the Minister of Foreign Affair and Trade, the Governor-General and members of the Chinese community.

His visit will serve to reinforce the ties formed earlier this year following the visit of Vice Premier of the Council of State, Madam Wu Yi, the third highest ranking person in the Chinese government. Earlier this month, Jamaica was among eight CARICOM countries who participated in the 7th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) held in Xiamen in early September.

According to Mr. Fan Xuean, First Secretary at the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica, Jamaica can expect more visits from Chinese commercial and economic delegations. Over the next month, two delegations will be attending trade shows in Jamaica. In September, Beijing's Microbridge Corporation will have two booths at Kingston's hardware expo. On October 17, a delegation numbering approximately a dozen people will be at Montego Bay's Expo 2003. First Secretary Fan says that, "after the visit of Madam Wu, the Chinese government has placed great attention on Jamaica to develop good relations." These relations are in the realm of trade and economic sectors.
