Cashing in on Cash
published: Friday | September 19, 2003

I HOPE the friends whom Johnny Cash made in Jamaica over his years of visits to this country will hold even a small memorial service for him. He loved this place and demonstrated it tangibly.

But unlike all those who are praising his wonderful musical career, I don't think he was a good singer at all. Anyway he gave generously to charity, so at least give him a send-off!

HOMELESS

THE SUSTAINED ad campaign had the two major talk facilitators going at each other's throats and spending millions in the media. The 'voice' that carried the message of the Grants proclaimed all sorts of things about home ownership. Or was it yard ownership? Anyway there is trouble in paradise, disharmony in the home and Zap! De contract is off! The ugly monster greed reared its head when the 'voice' demanded twice the talent fee and the real yard owner said - hell no! The moral of the story is that people who sign multimillion-dollar cheques have plenty power.

KRAAL REPORT

A LITTLE bird tells me the contents of the report into what really went on at that mid-Clarendon killing spree are rather explosive. Who was the driver of the vehicle that went to the scene? Just what did the little girl see? And exactly what was Reneto's role? He seems to be doing the media circuit, the party circuit and the gabfest all at once.

DINOSAURS IN POWER

WHAT'S WITH old fogies and positions of power? If you take an unscientific poll, you would see that the world and most huge corporations are run by men who should have long been put out to pasture. I am the first man to jump up and make a case for the wisdom of years but why don't old men retire gracefully like Nelson Mandela?

My beef is with the Pope who during his latest visit to Slovakia could not pronounce words properly, slumped off into dreamland a few times and had the shakes all the time. The Catholic Church likes to talk about mercy. How about mercifully revisiting the laws that say the Pope has to drop dead on the job before he is replaced?

RAGS TO RICHES

MANY JOURNALISTS in Jamaica over the years have ended up paupers because media houses are so damn cheap. They want a scoop from you every day but don't match the news value with a decent pay cheque.

At least one journalist has broken ranks with his poor colleagues. I say more power to him. He deserves every luxury he works hard to earn. And with the move to the multimillion-dollar home in the hills, he can, like George Jefferson, sing, "We're movin' on up... we finally got a piece of the pie."

OF BOOKS ON MALVO

CHIEF MOOSE (the black cop who handled the Washington Sniper case), has written a book about the incident. Duh! If you didn't expect it, you're a fool. So what's all the crying foul for? Do you think the white establishment in America cares if a black Jamaican youth and a black American Muslim, get a fair trial?

PROSTATE AND VIAGRA

'EAR' AND I have had a falling out because I think she is a cold-hearted bitch. Imagine having a big laugh because she thinks it's payback that so many relatively young men have either died from or are suffering with prostate cancer. She thinks God is striking us down for our wild ways while she and many of her married and single girlfriends are having the time of their lives with younger men.

She found it rather funny that the late father of the politician had begun taking the little blue pills to keep up with his youthful gal-pal. After years of abuse the wife now has the last laugh because he succumbed to his Viagra-induced heart attack. I guess I will have to go to the gym, drink up my roots and keep a close eye on my missus who at 53 looks 10 years younger.

FISHING VILLAGE

'EYE' RETURNED from her vacation with a massive craving for steamed fish and boiled bananas. So early Saturday morning she went to Greenwich Farm fishing village and got more than snappers, parrots, snook and jack fish. She learnt that the two large corporations that border the village have at various times made offers to buy them out instead of facing potentially dangerous fires on the one hand or costly law suits after oil spills on the other.
