Buy Jamaican!
published: Friday | September 19, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ a recent news report where Minister of Industry & Tourism, Aloun Assamba promised to encourage the Government to purchase at least 10% of inputs from Jamaican firms. I was really amazed at her statement, first of all, if the Government has to be actually encouraged to buy Jamaican, then what sort of message are we sending to the rest of Jamaica?

If our own Government has to be prompted to buy as little as 10%, do we really expect the Jamaican public to follow suit & buy the remaining 90%? Jamaican products have proven to be world class in standard and quality. Production drives any economy, we must support our own, reducing imports and foreign exchange demand, simple economics. The Minister's statement was surprising, if not shocking. The Government of Jamaica amazes me.

I am, etc.,
