THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE on behalf of all the ground staff of Air Jamaica Ltd. We would like to be advised by anyone who is suitably qualified on how we could become unionised without being fired for our efforts. Our fear is that some pretext for dismissal, totally unrelated to union activity, would be found to sever our relationship with the airline and that is why we seek this medium for assistance.
There are several problems which face us, the least of which is remuneration and with each passing day, the attitude of some lead us to believe that nobody cares about our well-being.
We do not seek representation in order to be destructive or disruptive, but we feel that we need someone to defend us when we are abused and/or unjustly accused by those in authority. Our aim is not to encourage and protect the few among us who are irresponsible and incompetent.
Our beloved company has a cadre of dedicated people who extend themselves constantly. I will not here disclose the nature of our discontent. Suffice it to say, that the pain we experience because of the callous disregard of our feelings is deep-seated and very real.
I am, etc.,
