THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WAS very pleased to see and read your recent editorial entitled "Could the PM be serious?"
Indeed the editorial speaks to a number of points I have been asking myself, and which I will need to raise, if ever I get a chance to speak in the sectoral debate in the present Parliament.
When I see and hear some of the utterances of my colleagues, leaders and parliamentarians of the government, I wonder where is the politics of reality.
If indeed we have reduced our poverty level in Jamaica by 50% in the last 10 years then it can only be because we have left out of our population count a fair proportion of our citizens. That proportion being the unemployed, the unemployable and the outcast whom if we do not count in our census will really give us a picture of real success.
Isn't this really a case of Nero fiddling while Rome burns? Or just as crime is down, while every year in reality our murder rate increases, and incest and rape becomes common place; and the burglar bars cover every possible entry to our homes.
With this kind of approach the real vision to move Jamaica forward will be slow in coming.
I am, etc.,
